Most of the time when I tell people what I do when I just solely mention the title, they say… “what is that?” But once I explain and dive a little deeper, it’s quickly followed by “Ohhh!”

Most people know or are familiar with what a birth doula does, but not a death doula. With that being said, here’s the break down:

A death doula is someone that provides support to someone that is the one transitioning, or the family member of someone that is preparing to transition. That support can look like anything from:

• Emotional Support/Grief + Bereavement Support/Spiritual Support (to the actively dying and/or their loved one’s pre- death, during, and post death)

• Funeral Planning/Memorial Planning and Hosting

• Companionship to the actively dying and making their final days as comfortable and peaceful as possible (Examples: praying with them, holding their hand, playing their favorite music, providing aromatherapy, etc.)

• Providing and connecting resources for the actively dying and their families

• Helping families and loved ones with pre-death and post-death paperwork

• Curating prayer vigils/rituals for the actively dying and their families/loved ones

• Family mediation
